LEFT COAST AD JOURNAL

The "Who" Behind the "Where"

Los Angeles, CA - "Where's my Kinetica!?"

You've seen the billboards. There's more of them out there than 7-11's. But what the hell is "Kinetica"? Attempts to contact the highly secretive company have failed. The company's "headquarters" is a small building on the Sony lot. We can make out people moving about inside through the limosine-tint windows, but nobody ever answers the door.

An online bank? A car insurance company? High colonics in a pill? Who knows. But we do know the "who" behind the billboards.

Advertising newcomer Gato Loco, a division of Cine Alma Pictures, is behind the Kinetica billboard campaign. We have also learned that Gato Loco will be producing a number of planned network television commercials for the mysterious company. Filmmaker and Cine Alma founder J. Anthony Gonzales will be writing and directing the 30-second spots. Confirmed cohorts include Signature Production's own Brandon Rice and award-winning composer Herman Witkam.

"The first spot cycle will start on August 1st. This is our first real ad gig, so it's kind of a sink or swim situation. I'm looking forward to working with a number of talented and creative people," Gonzales said.

Gonzales could neither confirm nor deny any guess as to what Kinetica actually is, but he did have this to say about the first television ad, "It's kind of like Jean-Claude Van Damme meets Gort as sponsored by Huggies."

Of course the question everybody wants to know is, will the commercial be in color?

"All my stuff is shot in color," Gonzales replied with a smile.

What about a talking dog?

Gonzales simply answered, "Woof."

We can only imagine what Gato Loco and Kinetica have in store for television. God help us all.

For a second there I considered a grow operation but...

Nice keying on the billboard. Could maybe put in a bigger sky though.
Just read a tut for AE expaining how. I dont use AE but I saved the link for the vid tut if you want it.

But I'm biting. What is in that building?
edit: ~building is not in story?~.

UPDATE: Draft#3 (and probably final draft) of script is complete. We have a location secured, but it's not my first choice. I'm probably going to have to make some compromises but that's life.

I hope everybody's projects are coming along as well.

Cheers!

Hey John,

Good luck with the shoot!

I had an idea for this fest but I am leaving to drive across the country and don't see how I'll have time. My wife and I have a hefty schedule of visiting several national parks before arriving in Oregon. Then I plan to spend time in my old stomping grounds and visit the dvxers out there! Then back home via Canada.

Just don't think I'll make the deadline!

But I'll be watching them when they're done!

Good luck!

Thanks, I appreciate that. (I can't wait to hit the road!!! I guess that is why I am up... I am so excited that I can't even sleep!)

I see that you are working with the b-man... how did that come about? You shot your last two fests yourself, right?

On my side of the fence, I saw John send out a call for DP's on his project, and I sent him a PM with some links to some stuff, and we talked some more about things, and that's how it happened :) I'm pretty excited about it! The concept is pretty wacky, and clever all at the same time! Can't wait!

Yep, just put up a post looking for somebody to shoot. I actually don't shoot stuff myself. I do set out to, but in the end I find it hard to shoot and direct at the same time. I mean I could do it, but given the choice...

It gives me a chance to meet people as well.

Aloha back at ya!

Well, we are in Olympic National Park in Washington State. It is just beautiful here. And the weather is incredible for this area. (Many are complaining that it is too hot!)

We have a couple more days here and then we are off to see Rebecca, Norm, Ryan, Shawn and maybe other Portland OR dvxusers!!!

I would send pictures along but you'll have to wait until I get done with this trip. Just sitting here typing this while sitting in a campground is agony.

Off on a bike trip!

After a couple of false starts, I was able to pull something together out of God knows where. We shot all of the exteriors yesterday Sunday morning. Now we have some "interior" stuff to shoot. I'll be able to cut some stuff together to send to Mr. Witkam in the next couple of days.

The footage during capture looked good. Tonight I'll see it at size and start cutting this bad boy.

Cheers all!

Thanks Brandon.

Unfortunately, we had to kick Mr. Rice of the shoot because of his "scandalous" behavior. Who knew he'd react that way to the peyote? After a bit of heavy vomiting, Brandon grabbed some tamale's off the catering table, threw the script girl over his shoulder and... well, let's just say I've never seen anything like it in my life. I mean, those were pretty spicy tamales! And my God, I've never seen so much Cholula sauce in my life!!! i'm STILL washing that stuff out of all the gear.

And don't even get me started on the whole "my HVX is bigger than your DVX" thing.

Last we saw him, he was curled up, naked, fetal position, next to a large cactus with ants all over his tobasco sauce covered feet.

Don't worry, Brandon, I destroyed all the footage. :lipsrseal EXCEPT for one tape. it's stored away somewhere safe, JUST IN CASE I need it one day.

Needless to say, I wound up shooting the spot myself. Footage looks pretty good. Not too shabby, I must say.

Finished up interior shots last night. Tom Marshall (tommyinla) brought his camera up and we had a blast shooting the scene.

I have one last "shot" to get this weekend. I've been cutting as I've been going along here, so as not to have a freak out deadline editing day this go around.

Great concept. The "old west" footage outside is terrific in its cinematography. When you go inside for the show pitch portion, I felt that the image made too much of a jump to "videoish." I think this was probably intentional given the concept of the spot, but it took me out of the fanasy world you created.

Can't go wrong with giant robots though.

Wow, I had a hard time finding this thread, at first ... glad I dug a little inside to know this was the "Wild, Wild, West" one.

John, this is the first I've seen, as I'm going in alphabetical/download order.

NICE production value on the exterior shots, and it was fun seeing Tom in there ... and then to see his credit at the end, lol! "Norm" ... now, is there a similarity in his performance I should be looking for, or was it just the default character name that gets used so much in movies for the crazy guy (Psycho), or the cow (City Slickers), etc.?

Anyway, nice job, and loved the VFX and music to boot (great work, Herman).

EDIT: I just realized I wasn't juding this as a commercial: i.e. does it make me want to buy, support, consume the product or advertisement? While I think this would be a humerous attempt for a TV channel to grab people's attention and say "Look, we're different, watch our stuff", it just didn't appeal to me to make me really want to WATCH that specific channel. So while it was entertaining, it didn't grab at any of my consumer vices, so to speak.

I'll start with the biggest disappointment about your entry, Cinemalma.

Immediately after viewing the commercial, I went to www.kineticatv.com (http://www.kineticatv.com). I did not find footage of babies fighting robots.

In all seriousness...

I loved the opening shot to this one. You chose some actors with interesting faces, and I'm a sucker for detailed close-ups on them. The whole beginning sequence with the two characters facing off was well-shot and edited.

The ending section reminded me very strongly of a traditional 50's sci-fi motif, and I'm a fan of that kinda thing. I especially liked the girly screams you placed over the cowboys during the obligatory "monster-vision" shots! Nice :)

My only "complaint" is that I had no idea what the product was on first viewing. It's because I unintentionally ignored the caption for "Kinetica Television" in favor of watching the much more interesting performances that were going on! (There's also a bit where they're white text on a light background and tricky to read).

Very enjoyable entry, well done!

John, John, John :)

First, I am truly sorry I couldn't work with you on this as we'd planned... secondly, you did a pretty good job without me :)

I guess my only complaint is that the production value of the guy pitching his idea was close but didn't match the stuff in the desert. I think if the footage in the desert would have looked just a tad better (better is totally subjective I know, but I guess even just a little more contrasty) and the pitch stuff looked a little worse, it would have worked better for me.

It's also hard for me to judge since I saw the script from the very beginning.

But overall, funny concept, and some great shots and editing.

Oh, and the VFX turned out fantastic!!

Thanks. I agree. I think with a better lighting setup and mic, the meeting room scene would have come out better. I don't know if "videoish" is a problem in the television world, but I know what you're saying.

And, oh yes, giant robots are super poo pooing cool!

Thanks for watching!

Thanks, Norm! Glad you liked it. I agree with your points. There was a VO piece at the end, as well as another tagline, "Light years away from ordinary!", but overlayed with the robot and the VFX and the SFX and cowboys and the text... whew! It was like sensory overload! I wasn't sure if the product/service came out, so I guess I know what you are saying about the "selling the product" thing.

BTW - I just figured Norm was a good name for a guy who was a "Customer Service Tech II". Not that there's anything wrong with that. :) Next time, I'll make Norm a Fortune 500 CEO, or a Professional Athlete, or the guy who gets the girl in the end. Deal?

Thanks again for watching!

Thanks! It seems that the actual product/service got a little lost in the "filmmaking". :) I've seen a fair share of commercials where I thought they were cool but cannot, for the life of me, remember what the hell they were selling. I guess I made one of those.

The girly screams were the last things I mixed in. My actors are going to hate it, but I love it!

Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching!

Brandon, Brandon, Brandon...

That's a great idea about the "film" stuff versus the meeting scene. I didn't use any CC on the desert stuff. That's straight off the camera. I tried to work a little with meeting room (flourescent light hell!), and I was able to warm it up a bit, but I know it could look better (or worse, but "good" worse).

VFX was my first real try at something like that. "That absolutely looks like shi*" came out of mouth about every other render. :) If you only knew how I shot/edited it all together...

This looks like a lot of fun.
The opening shot is awesome.
But I can't get it to play smoothly.
Anyone else having this problem?

Thanks Norm and Noel. :)

I, too, would like to see the long cut of the dialog. I bet it would cut together well.

I actually had a problem with the jitters when showing it to somebody on my laptop. Not sure why. Same file on a different computer plays fine. Sorry you didn't get a chance to watch a good copy of it.

The opening shot along with Hermans music nailed the opening and set the mood. Clint Eastwood baby. (Herman is amazing.)

The outside shots make me wish you would do a short western someday.

The only major crits I have is the audio in the studio shots. The audio sounds too roomy in those cuts.
I understand the problems behind it, really it requires an audio tech, but that is an area that could use more focus.

I liked the robot scenes at the end. I didn't see any VFX credits though.

Once again I was not let down.
-Thanks again.

/Oh, nice casting too.

Glad you liked it! Herman really helped me out with this one. I know he was mucho busy over the last month and I really appreciated his time and help.

The audio in the meeting room was a bit of a problem. Lots of echo! It was a lot worse, believe me. But that's my bad for not hooking myself up with good sound.

I did the VFX myself using AE and Particle Illusion. The robot was actually one of my kids wind-ups toys that I took a Dremel tool to and trash painted. I wound it up and shot a dozen or so takes of it against the green screen in my garage. I masked out the winder (among other things). Once you add in the energy waves and SFX, I don't think it came out too badly, especially for the "look" I was going for.

Thanks for watching!

Great spot cinealma. Look and feel are really good. Opening and ending were great but the middle just reminded me of the scenario for the fest. As a VFX guy I must say excellent work. And the chick scream coming from the guy made me laugh.

Excellent entry! Thanks for sharing.

You might approach Fox with this idea. It would be much better than American Idol.

I got a kick out of this spot. The outdoor scenes were much better than the indoor. I had a hard time matching them up in my head, so the transition was a little weird. Great job, though. It was very entertaining and funny.

Thanks, guys. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I had a blast making it! It seems the meeting room scene pulled a lot of people out of it. I'm thinking that better color correction and audio might make a HUGE difference.
