View Full Version : Super low budget jib, Jiblit?

Well, due to budget constraints i decided to do this super ghetto style.
I used:
1 Pool Brush pole R115.00
2 Pulleys R12.00 each
6m Cable R60.00
Some scrap Aluminium
My current tripod.
Old Bicycle Bottom Bracket.
Old Spring.
Zip Ties.
Some old bolts.

Firstly, cut out the end of the arm so that the BB could fit pretty snug, there was already another hole about 50mm down so i stuck a bolt through there and used some zip ties to secure the bb into the end of the pole.

I had some scrap Ali that i cut and had welded at 90' for the camera to sit on. Bolted that onto 1 end of the bb and a pulley onto the other end of the bb.

On the other end i just put a bolt through the pole, nut pulley tilt handle and another nut.
Looped the cable 1 and a half times around each pulley and joined it with a spring to keep it tight.
to mount it on the tripod i mounted a piece of 90' Ali on the wedgeplate and zip ties the jib arm onto it. I mounted my monitor there as well. I also have one of those remote zoom and rec things which will be mounted at some stage. I will buy a long piece of threaded bar to put some weights on, i just used a plastic bag with some rocks in at the moment to test it...

I'll put up some footage soon, but here are the pics of the crane set up so far.

ARRRRGGGHH! Why dont attatchments work???? The gods are not happy with me for building this jib, Hold on, i'm about to run around in circles like a headless chicken and figure out another jedi knight master plan...

Here we go, footage is coming in a few min also...http://home.worldonline.co.za/~breynolds/jiblit/jiblit.jpg
Unfortunately, i don't have any weights yet so i used a plastic bag with some stones. handle folded forward to show nuts and bolts. Ghetto!
http://home.worldonline.co.za/~breynolds/jiblit/jiblit2.jpg
Tripos mount is just some ali bolted on and zip tied to the pole. So simple even a lovely lady like mine can use it perfectly.
http://home.worldonline.co.za/~breynolds/jiblit/jiblit3.jpg
I love zip ties, rubber bands and gaffer tape.
http://home.worldonline.co.za/~breynolds/jiblit/jiblit4.jpg
I still need to make a shade thingy for the monitor.
http://home.worldonline.co.za/~breynolds/jiblit/jiblit5.jpg
You can stick it in all sorts of little nooks and crannies.

fottage just now

Please excuse the spot on the lens and the auto iris, and yes i know its shot with a fisheye which hides all the shakes, i'll put some other footage up when i get around to shooting something nicely...

hey Attic6,
Thanks for the pictures and the video. I'm in the process of building my DIY Jib, I just hope it can be as flexible and nice as yours. :)
Thanks,
Luis

Hey Attic6, thats not bad at all. It seems to to the job. I like the wave to the camera upsidedown.

Attic6
06-21-2007, 12:49 AM
If i didn't have the plastic bag doing the job of the weights i could flip around 3 or 4 times. Thanks, i practiced the wave for about 45 minutes in front of the mirror before going outside to shoot it, and we only got it right on the 47th take anyway!
(I wish i weighed the packet of stones, i'm off to thumbsuck some weights!)

great option using the pool pole! I was starting to collect the hardware to do this myself for a much lighter camera. Very novel.

Can you give more detail on how you mounted the pullies and set up the heads (on either end)?

Thanks, great work!

anybody know/recognize the hardware used at the camera end?

Sorry, i've been away partying... At the camera end, there is a bicycle bottom bracket, which is the ting that the crank arms bolt onto, this one was brand new so the bearings are still 100% smooth and it is a complete unit with spindle bearings and shell. The end of the spindle is flat and there is a 15mm bolt going into it. I just welded up a 90' piece of aluminium and put a 15mm hole for the bolt to go through. and used a cone spacer of another set of bicycle cranks to give it a little more support. I'll take some close up pics of how all the little bits go together tonight.
The pool pole was cut (very roughly) to let the BB shell just sit snug and not have too much movement. Then i just zip tied the BB to a bolt through one of the regular holes in the pole. It should make more sense when i have some more pics of all the bits. It could be made alot more cleanly and nicely, but my access to nice tools is really limited at the moment.

Ok, the pulley side. I drilled a hole through the middle ot the bolt going into the spindle and put a thinner bolt that fitted the pulley through. and basically bolted the pulley onto the bolt onto the bb spindle. Once again the pics will make this a little clearer. i do plan on drilling out the pulley to fit strainght over the spindle, but i just wanted to get it working at the time. I'll put up pics of that when i get around to getting it done.

I'm busy working on the mk2 versiion with 2 axis head controlled by wires also.

I saw this guy, on this site who used a camcrane just tied onto a ladder. Wonder if we can do the same here...Any ideas/suggestions ? Just trying to work it without the tripod head..

Attic6
06-29-2007, 03:49 AM
I was thinking of using a bigass castor wheel and flipping it upside down and putting the axle bolt through the arm. somehow bolting it onto a tripod. i've seen some that work like that and it looks bretty good.

New Update!!! Replaced the ghetto bolt through the back end with a cheap ass bicycle front hub. The tilt is now super smooth, maybe even a little too smooth (scratches head). I now have 2 kg's of weights on the back, but only a tiny GS something 3ccd on the front at the moment.
Work has started on the Jiblit mkII with 2axis head. Pics to follow when the cybershot comes home with the girlfriend.

hmmm weekend time!
First paying shoot with the jiblit on sunday!

Can we get more pics/details of your new change, the C.A.B.F.H. installed on the back? Smooth is good, baby.. like "BUDDAaaa"

J

Attic6
07-02-2007, 01:29 AM
it's exactly the same theory as the front end, just a regular bicycle front hub. go into a bike shop and ask for the absolute cheapest bicycle front hub ever and thats what i used, it cost me R15.00 which is about $2.00 zip tied on with exactly the same method, and the pulley just sits right on the axle, and the handle is bolted on ontop of that. i put a 10mm threaded bar a little further forward to put the weights on so they didn't interfere with the tilt mechanism.

the girlfriend is coming home tonight so pics should be up tomorrow...

Attic6
07-02-2007, 01:33 AM
I've been thinking of only using only bicycle parts for all the moving bits on the mkII version. the L shaped bit for the 2 axis head is welded together, looks hot like some sort of wierd pipe. I love bicycle stuff!!!

TeamJoeDawn
07-02-2007, 05:37 AM
There is a product created with a pole, similar to this one, but I really like the yoke mount. Basically, your body is the tripod.

Between the bike parts and pics from this website, I can see a good idea forming.

The First 2 are the new back end of the jiblit, cheap ass bicycle front hub!!!

and the last 2 are the L part of the new 2 axis version that is under construction.

TeamJoeDawn

I love the bike parts aspect.. well made, manufactured hubs.. smooth as silk!

How do you get the spindle that comes out of the "cheap ass hub" to stick far enough out to mount anything to it? It looks like it goes all the way through the pully, then the handle (on the back end of the jib). The axle isn't normally that long, is it?

Joseph

Keep up the good work!

TeamJoeDawn

What is the L bracket for again?

J

Attic6
07-06-2007, 06:03 AM
The axle from the hub, i loosened it one side so the cone nuts were right at the end, then tightened the other side down again so the axle was really offset. this wont work with a sealed bearing hub.

The L bracket is part of the head, it will hang from the part with the shiny pole sticking through and the aluminium plate from the mk1 will join onto another bit sticking through where you can see the other bearings. this will all Hang from a levelled system on the end of the crane arm. getting there slowly.

Luckily we have some warraty frames at my day job for me to hack up!

and without the 3rd axis. (so far)

TeamJoeDawn
07-06-2007, 07:22 AM
Hmmm.... 3rd axis.. tough to do I think, on the light.

R/C servos? lightweight power screwdriver / drill motors? cable linkage for rotation?

J

Attic6
07-06-2007, 07:52 AM
I just had the most awsome jedi knight warrior king idea ever. I'm not going to explain until i check if it'll actually work or not, but according to my brain it should give the smoooooooothest motion ever.

And yeah, 3rd axis is a pipe dream at the moment, but if i used rc gear it could definately be a possibility! this will take a while, but its great fun re-inventing stuff! Trying to find a light weight big circular bearing that will work is a tough ask, i have something up my sleve but i think it's a bit small for a dvx lens to see through, but for a small handicam it would be well possible. Its the bearing out of a gyro from a bmx, inside is about 2.5" so should fit with a small camera, but once again its about making a big mission to actually design something functional to control it.

weekend is on...

i'm building a jib arm and would like to know if anyone can tell me a good ratio to put the main pivot point at?? my arms are a total length of 11'6" and i was thinking 2'4" up the pole that would be a 1:4 ratio. does that sound about right?

Attic6
09-06-2007, 12:08 AM
I have no idea :) i'm doing mine at about a 40/60 split, i just don't want 60lbs on the back when i use it with my adaptor and all the other cheesy bits. I know some of the pro ones have stupidly long ratios. I guess it depends what camera you use on the end. If i was rocking a wee little handy cam id make it a way longer ratio.

looking for help with a remote/wired head for my jib arm that i'm building. i want to put some 12v motors to drive the unit and was wondering what people are using for electronic speed controls, motors, servos etc. i've looked at some ESC's that are 4.8v and $50/each, but i'm not sure what voltage to run the system on. has anyone done this before? also wondering if i can use a playstation/nintendo 64 gamepad to control the two motors, this way i would have pan/tilt with one thumb control. and the other thumb can control the focus puller. thanks.
