I'm trying to decide whether to get a new HV20, a used GL1, or a used VX1000. Which do you guys think? I will be making indie films.

Don't get the GL-1. The tape transport is weak. Mine went out on my old GL-1 and I know of several others who have had the same problem. The HV20 is far superior as far as image goes, but lacks the manual control of the GL-1. Also, the chip set in a GL-1 is 1/4 inch as compared to 1/2.7 inch in the HV20. I have never used the VX1000, so I just don't know about it. I don't think you can go wrong with an HV20 at it's pricepoint.

Click my "Robin the Spy" banner below for a look at my new short that was shot entirely with the HV20, no additional lenses or filters.

Just some CC work.

PS- It was my first time using it so it can only get better from here.

Cheers,

Mike

I guess I will the HV20 then. Now, I'm going to get some accessories to make it a bit more pro. But I have questions...

I am going to need to plug in an XLR shotgun mic. I heard the BeachTek adapters are good. Which one should I get? (http://beachtek.com/cgi-bin/online/store.php)

Also, I'm going to need a steadicam. I cannot spend more than $300. Which should I get?

DXA-2s

Actually you want the DXA-6. It's the cheapest adapter that still provides phantom power.

Good decision. You will get significantly better video quality from the HV20 than from either of those, and your camera will be new.

I got the DXA-6VU for the meters. It's longer than the camera by an inch or two but it gives it that nice little heft my old GL1 had, certainly should smooth the shakiness a little if going handheld.

True, my GL1 tape transport died, after five years of light use though! I'll get it repaired eventually since the discontinued product warranty goes to 2009 for me. But would I get a GL1 today? No, not when the HV20 is just a couple hundred dollars more (going by typical eBay $800 maximum mark for GL1's).

Awesome. Also, someone on another forum recommended the DVC20. What do you guys think of it? It would be the same price as the HV20.

I'm considering getting the Letus35 for the HV20. First of all, does it work with the HV20? Just want to clarify....

If I was to purchase the Letus35, would I have to buy anything else? Or would that be all that I needed?
