I'm trying to transfer my media files from my G4's internal hard drive to an external firewire hard drive. I copied my QT movie project file located in my capture scratch folder to my external hard drive, then put my original file in the trash. I also made a copy of the FCP project file (shortcut?), and then put my original files in my trash. When I tried opening up the file with my ext. hard drive, FCP said there was no media available for my project. What did I do wrong, and what is the most thorough way to make sure all my files are copied correctly?
Thanks,
Alexander

Media Manager is the most thorough way to transfer files. You can access this through the FILE Menu in FCP. When selected a indow will pop up. Read through it and it will transfer the entire projsect wherever yu want it.
I would agree with what Justin said about Media Manager, just make sure you read through the manual so you have an understanding of what you are doing.
MM is the safest and cleanest way to move stuff around without confusing FCP with regard to where are once moved.
......and it works great.

Can't you just drag a project from one folder to another folder? I just dragged 7 projects from my internal hard drive to a external firewire hard drive. I didn't use the MM at all.
You definitely can, but Alex asked for the most thorough method of doing this. *As FCP places different facets of a project (captured media, project files, render files, etc.) in different directories, Media Manager simplifies the task of transferring all the necessary files to another location.
Also, keep in mind, a project isn't just one file. You'll need the actual project file as well as all its supporting files (media, render, etc.) for the project to function correctly once it has been moved.
However, it's a very good idea to learn how FCP organizes project files so that you can pick out what you need without MM if there is ever a need to do so.

the files that I transferred were all self contained movie files.
Ok, well that's not actually transferring a project then :) (in the FCP project sense)
